As the nights get colder and darker, the chance of severe weather increases. Storms, floods and other extreme conditions can cause damage to the energy network infrastructure and disrupt your energy supply.

We're dedicated to keeping our customers safe and warm, whatever the weather.

How to stay safe and warm over the colder months

  • Know your free emergency numbers - for a gas emergency, dial 0800 111 999*. In a power cut dial 105.
  • Prepare your home – keep a torch handy and get your appliances serviced by a Gas Safe Registered engineer to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
  • Check any existing pipe insulation - make sure it is in good condition to protect your external pipes and taps from freezing in cold weather.
  • Be Carbon Monoxide aware - fit a carbon monoxide alarm and make sure you test it regularly and check its expiry date. Know the signs and symptoms of CO poisoning.
  • Join the Priority Services Register (PSR) - the PSR helps gas and electricity companies look after customers who have additional communication, access or safety needs. Find out more about the extra support we offer.
  • Look out for relatives and neighbours - with 3.6 million older people in the UK living alone**, please take a minute to check on your neighbours. Are they prepared for the colder months? Can you help carry out some basic checks for them?
  • Keep your eyes open – keep an eye on the weather forecast and watch out for weather warnings.
  • Stay well this winter – by following advice from NHS Winter Health. Wear layers to keep warm and regularly have hot drinks. Try to check on your neighbours, especially if they could be particularly vulnerable in cold weather.
